Is it reasonable to expect that you can download this free program, Open Office, and expect to do just about everything you can do with the $479 MS Office XP Standard program and just as easily? Yes, Open Office even has a database program that is fully compatible with Microsoft's Access. In short, anything you can do in PowerPoint you can do in Impress. There are no material differences between the two products. Open Office's answer to PowerPoint is called Impress. In other words, they see it as a viable alternative to MS Office for both PCs and Macs: It's completely free.' These MS Office cousins may not have all of the bells and whistles of their Microsoft equivalent, but they have most of them. There really are excellent, full-featured cousins of MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Access. What's the catch? This almost sounds too good to be true! It's not. And, you don't have to tolerate those cumbersome Microsoft anti-piracy machinations, such as Product Activation, authenticity verification, and 25-digit product keys. You don't have to fork out hundreds of dollars to buy new software or to upgrade the old. There are also two online free programs that rival Microsoft's Excel and Word. Each not only creates documents, presentations, and spreadsheets well, but each is also compatible with Microsoft Office's equivalent programs, including those of Microsoft Office 2007. There are both free and a low-cost, office-suite alternatives to the most familiar one on the market, MS Office. However, with office programs ? those bundled groups of word processing, graphics and spreadsheets that are handle most office functions ? the picture is brighter. You can buy a MAC with OS X, buy a PC with Linux instead of Window ? or keep using your old Windows software until it drops. Admittedly there are limited alternatives to Microsoft's Windows software.
